Mater Dei Hospital, the main hospital in Malta, has won the 2009 Environment Award for Industry in the category of Conservation for Sustainable Development. Mater Dei Hospital was recognised for its adoption of a holistic programme earmarked to consolidate the newly operational building engineering processes geared with environmental protection in mind. Last year, Mater Dei Hospital started using various environmental friendly features which were included in the design phase. One of these features is a greywater recycle system designed, installed and commissioned by FM Environmental (Malta) Ltd. The 240 m3 per day system takes the greywater from wash basins and showers, which is biologically treated and disinfected to a high quality standard suitable for irrigation purposes of its soft and hard landscaping throughout the hospital.

The treatment plant consists of below ground concrete tanks, consisting of an inlet balance tank, aeration basin, sludge and scum returns, tertiary filtration set-up complete with Sodium Hypochlorite disinfection achieving an effluent quality better than 10:10 mg/l BOD, SS. FM Malta also supplied the control panels, associated instrumentation, all mechanical and electrical installation works and process commissioning.
