RBC - ROTATING BIOLOGICAL CONTACTORS

The RBC unit forms part of the attached growth biological treatment systems. Essentially the system consists of a number of partially submerged closely-spaced circular discs of polystyrene or polyvinyl chloride. These discs are mounted on a common shaft and rotated slowly in the mixed liquor. This allows for biological growths to become attached to the surface of the discs and eventually form a slime layer over the entire surface area of the discs. The rotation of the discs alternatively contacts the biomass with the organic material in the wastewater a and then with the atmosphere for adsorption of oxygen. Typical uses of the RBC plants are found in housing schemes, hotels & restaurants and caravan parks.

Typical complete RBC plants are made of three stages; primary settlement, the RBC module for biological treatment and final settlement.

For small treatment plants the RBC module is provided in packaged form and supplied complete with GRP or steel basin ready to be installed in open air or closed areas. For larger plants, the disc module is supplied separate to be installed in concrete or epoxy-coated steel basin.

For larger installations a number of RBC modules can be installed in parallel or in series, depending on the sewage concentration and the requirement for ammonia removal.
